The picture itself is very dark in color, representing a dark chaotic time. The Revolution is represented by the bicycle. All of these different people are trying to ride it at one time, not really working together to accomplish their goal. The result is complete chaos.
It depicts people not working as a team, disjointedness, chaos, too many people trying to run the country.
The tone of the story darkens when Anoosh is excited and she loses all faith ain God and she becomes an older younf lady with a very angry demeanor.
In the panel with the bicycle a very chaotic revolution is depicted. All these people (none with as smile on their face) going in different directions, with no one pedaling!
The revolution is dipicted as being disorganized and chaotic. it seems as if everyone has a different opinion as to how and what direction the revolution should take. Theirs no clear direction, hence chaos. Too many cooks spoil the broth.
The symbol represents that if everyone is not fighting together then they would just fall down, like riding a bike without anyone pedaling the pedal.
anoosh looses all faith in god and just gives up. in the middle of a revolution, noone works together and everything turns into complete chaos because of it.
The picture depicts people in Iran not working together. There are too many people who want to do different things. The bicycle is like the Revolution in Iran, because if don't pedal the bike and get the bike to work, you will fall. As shown in the picture in the book. No one was working together so the bicycle wasn't moving. They all fell and didn't get what they wanted. They need to pedal together to get somewhere.
Tania- In response to what Nicholas, I agree with what you said the picture is trying to say...it does look very chaotic and unorganized.
svet- I dont think you could have worded that any better. I think that they were all trying to do to many things and chaos was caused, by not working together.
The pictures looks so dark. In the revolution picture I see men falling off the bike, all voulnarable and need help. They are not working as a team.
(Cindy G) I agree with what Karyn said. The bike wont move unless they all work together to pedal together. There is too many people with differnt ideas and no one is working together thats why they are in a heap fallen over
I believe that bicycle is the symbolism of revolution thus need to pedal at the right direction to move on ahead. The picture with alot of people on the bicylce portray that there were many people and not enough bicyles for them to pedal and one would not give up or arrange their turn to ride the bicycle. Different opionions, different results.
I beleive that Satrapi give the story it's darkness on the very first pages (3-4). She mentions that they must start wearing the veil right away on the first page and how it corrupted the students.
the second page talks about how Sadam dictates how he will change the school system. then, on the third page it talks about how the protestingh started.
I AGREE WITH KARYN'S RESPONSE, THE BIKE DOES REPRESENT THE REVOULUTION AND HOW THE PEOPLE WOULDN'T WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM.
The revolution is like a bicyle, for it to move they have to pedal together and in one direction. From this page you can see the revolution is disorganized and chaotic that makes them to fall.It also seems the people in the revolution are sad, this is portried by the dark picture.

The picture for sure is symbolzing the revolution. It's clearly drawn to make it appeal in that way I honestly think. The bicyle for sure I think symbolize it, the turning and not moving, the people who don't seem to be working together at all. I think what the picture clear states that the revolution isn't going anywhere because too many people are trying to do too many things all at the same time. Not working together, only resulting in chaos and no gain.
I feel that she was saying that there was no one force driving the revolution; and so it could not progress, kind of like opposing teams tripping over one another, not caring about anything,or anyone in the way; and so the metaphoric bike falls over. Leaving a mess and nothing to show for it.
It depicts the revolution as being very chaotic. Everyone's not working together to be able to pedal the bike in one direction.
I think that what's being symbolized in this picture is the country going through the Revolution. All the people are joined together with each having or wanting their own needs within the country. Thus, it seems that they aren't comfortable and everyone has their own sense of direction. Also, I believe that each of the wheels on the bike repersent each of the revolution that the country had gone through as explained on page 11.
I definitely agree with kaiapapaya06 stating that the pitcure itself was drawn with darkness. With the dark background, it does in a way, symbolize how "dark" a revolution can bring to a country.
jeremiah speed i think this shows that evrybody was following each other the bike shows that its going to be a bummpy ride.the background was black to show its a dark fight and every body needs to work togerther if they wanna ride
The dark picture shows the beginning of the revolution. The bicycle represents the confusion of the start of the war. The people just hop on all at the same time, not taking a minute to join together and work as a team. Therefore they all fall. Together we stand, divided we fall.
I would agree with most comments, the picture is showing a bicycle symbolizing the Revolution and, of course; it is not moving anywhere due to all the different beliefs, opinions, and lack of inability to work together. I may not think she gave up on her beliefs about god yet, she was only putting it aside for awhile. Jsweeney
In response to nicholas, I have to agree that the picture does depict chaos and different opinions.
the color of the background represents the dark time. it also represents death and light to the people. in a word of saying as i put it "will there ever be peace?" also the kids in soldier uniforms pretending to become soldiers, it shows pride to there country and it shows hardship to support the country no matter what happens. the people died on the bicycle proves that, there will be lots of blood drawn in this stage of time.
