On page 6, the first panel shows the author. What does the background behind her symbolize?

On the left side of the panel are all of the things the author once knew (in white). The background of the left side, however, is black. I believe this means that because of what was happening in her country at the time, all of the things she once knew were viewed as wrong and unnacceptable. On the right side, she is pictured wearing a veil. This is very symbolic of the revolution and how things were changing. The ornate design in black is representative of tradition. It is pictured in black here because it is something strange and different to the author. The background on the right side is in white because that kind of behavior is acceptable at that point in time.

This panel is showing the two differnt sides to the narrator. One side she is really religous and that side of her wears the veil. The other side shows how modern her family was and how she didnt fit along with the other veiled side.

In the background on page 6 behind Marjane is showing her countries background. On the left it shows industry, and productivity, a sense of moving forward. On the right side, it represents the country's traditional values. The dark trellis artwork is black, and is covering up the light of what has been seen by productivity, previously seen on the left.

The panel symbolizes her ambivalence towards the veil. The left side of the panel shows the work it would take to fight against wearing it. The hammer, the gears and the ruler are indicative of this. The right side of the panel is lighter and has a beutiful pattern in it. It would be so much easier for her to just conform and wear the veil.

The background behind her shows part of her country and part of her life.
The left side of her shows her education, people kill people, the confusion she's having all around her and also the feelings she has, for example, though the sun shines above, she only feels the dark side.
The right side of her represents her country, culture or religions.

The background symbolizes the the two worlds that she has to live in. One is her love for self expression, freedom and equality through education. The other is her cultural and religious world that is suppressing her freedom of speech and her rights as a woman to choose how she wants to live her life, without restrictions and laws that infringe on her rights as a woman.

Tania- My response to what Donna wrote in her posting. I agree with what she is saying very much so that the right is more about her traditional and cultural background and that the left is about wanting the modern society life still.

You can say so many things by looking at her piture on page six. On one side of the piture i see education, westernized woman, unvailed, industral or well developed and stable country. On the other side vailed woman with a beautifyl and creative art behind her. It can alos represent as more speritual person.

This picture represents her thought process as things around her started to become chaotic. This picture also represents how she is divided into two. The right side of her represents the ideal person the government wanted her to be, and the left side represents the modern, confused little girl she really was.

Mao to Nicholas-you read my mind! I would totally say the same thing. You find that alot in this book. I found she always stood in both her freedom ways, and the way of the religion. I felt she felt like she needed to stay in constant with both the modern and the cultural affair.

This panel showes a struggle going on in her mind, modern, fighting traditional. She is showing the progress trying to be made by her family, and other people in Iran, while on the other side she is showing the traditional veil a woman should wear, and symbolizing religion as well. One side is somewhat chaotic, because it had to be hidden, and the other side seems tranquil, but suppressed. She knew what was expected but wanted to be hip and cool at the same time.

It symbolizes the authors two worlds. She wears a veil because that is what her country wants her to idealy be, but on the left side it represents her freedom in the modern life.

It symbolizes Marji's home life and school life. At home her family and her are very modern and free. At school, she's expected to be a certain way; very religious and reserved, so by wearing the veil it allows her to be just like everyone else.

I agree with Eve. Marjan is very religious and traditional, but she is also very modern.

i believe that on one side, it shows the authors of her intelligence and what she is good at. like the hammer. it symbolize that she has a hard heart that it is not easy to break apart. the ruler stating that she is also educated st school. the machine symbols is what she is going through her mind because the human mind works like a machine to us. on the other side with all of the lines and all, it represents her religious. the color on the left represents what she is going through at the time that she is still in school and being well taught. herself? i believe that it represents her freedom. like the white is freedom to her, but on the other hand, the dark black is like no place to be found part of her. it shows alot of the author. the symbols can represent alot too. like the ruler an represent how long the wat is going to be or how long will it take to be free from the war. the sombols can tell alot. it is only how you will put it and measure it.

The background on page 6 to me explains the two different feelings towards the veil. She is really religious but her family has taught her to be very modern and not over the top about her religion. That is where the side without the veil shows thinking and scattered picture, because she is confused on those feelings. The side with the veil looks so simple and peaceful.
