Graphic novels are much more visual than regular print texts.
I think reading Persepolis, a graphic novel, is a lot harder than reading standard chapter book. All the pictures were throwing me off from my understanding and attention of the main story. I would rather read a chapter book because it is a lot easier to follow and is less action for you eyes.

I thought that reading a graphic novel was so much more fun due to the fact that there were pictures in it. The reading was alot less than regular reading standard novel. The more graphics/pictures in a novel the author would explain less about the details because the picture itself explains it all. Standard reading allows me to see what I am thinking and visualizing in my mind. My imagination goes way beyond grahic novel.
I think reading Persepolis is somewhat more informative than reading a regular book. After reading what is written, I can look at the pictures for more information. I also think that graphic novels let authors show what they are trying to say easier because they can both write and draw what they are thinking.

Yes, I agree with the two of you guys. The reason are, it is easyer to picture and visual the image marjane wants us to see, and two, my eyes did hurt when I started reading the book, but after you kind of get use to it.
Reading a regular post gives you more details in the words to help you imagine and thoughts. whereas, the graphic book already have the pictures to help you see what and how things are.

Reading graphic novels are fun but i would rather read one where i could choose my book. Also, Reading graphic novels are more interesting if you have read a book similar to it. In other words, i like to read superman comic books because i have read them before and i know what the main idea of the book will be about.
The old adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" holds true, I believe. The images help to tell more of the story. They can convey feelings that words alone can have a hard time doing. The scene where she is floating in space helps to point out her feelings of loneliness, solitude and despair. The scene of the theater being burned down is a ghastly image that helps show how atrocious of an act she felt it was. Panels depicting the families running down the stairs during raids shows their panic, and since no one has a discernible face, it goes to show how this was something everyone was experiencing no matter their social class or beliefs on the situation.

I agree. The pictures explain so much that the text can be quite minimal and the point is thoroughly made. Even when the text makes the point the pictures depict emotions and thoughts that the words cannot.
Response to Sarit
Yes, the book is informative, because the pictures add more explanation to the novel. You do not need to imagine how the scene would have been. The book has already given the picture of what you might need to think or imagine of. That pose the advantage of graphic novels.
The graphic novel gives the story a darker edge to it with the black and white graphics. It also gives additional thoughts and ideas through the pictures. Draws attention to issues you may not have noticed without a picture to point it out. Like the loneliness she feels in the picture that shows her floating in space. That really put it into perspective.

I think reading a graphic novel is much more fun. You don't have to use your imagination as much because you have the pictures right there. It also seems much easier because the pictures also help tell the story.
Reading a graphic novel seemed very childish to me at first. I haven’t read a comic book since I was about ten. The more I read this novel the it seemed to have am important story line than what I don not expected from the beginning. The pictures told stories that were not in words. so, if reading long books is something new then this is a good book to read.

I personally think reading graphic novels is more fun and better to read, reason being you can understand things better. On the other hand reading standard prose, you have to think a lot, and gets a little boring. Graphic novels helps you read faster.

Luom, I wouldn't agree with you because to me graphics don't just make the book go faster, its better to understand also. But everyone has their own opinion I had to share mine.
I enjoyed reading a graphic novel, I wouldn't necessarily say I liked it more then a say a chapter type of novel but it was definitely interesting. I think that the comics helped to enhance the feelings that people were having in the book. Their facial expressions did a surprisingly good job at portraying different moods. I also enjoyed it because it was easier for me to understand the dialoged between people, there was more separation. It was a good way to character build as well, I felt like I was actually getting to know the characters personally because I could see them.

I agree with Trent when he sais it is fun to read a graphic novel. The reader does seem to have a better understanding of the book by looking at the pictures while reading. The pictures help to show the emotions of the characters and helps to portray the seriousness of the wars and the violence in Iran. By "feeling" the emotions, it is definitely more fun to read.

I liked how you talked about the picture of her floating in space. That was also a picture that stood out to me. I agree that the images depicted in the story are a very stricking way to make a point.
John Vu,
The first page of the book gave me the impression it is a quick, fun, and easy book to read and understand. I was right but underneath all that is a little Iran girl talking about her life during the revolution. What makes it a great book is the comic strips. It shows emotion and give you a better visualization. Unlike a standard book throws endless sentences at you; very descriptive one at that making it dull and harder to visualize. What Persepolis have is a book with both worlds. Conveying points across with short sentences and illistrations.
Graphic novels allows the author to tell the story through pictures and text. But the text can range in length ,and in general graphic novel obviously uses more picture. Reading a standard chapter book emphases through words or description. on a occasion there may be some pictures.
I agree with you, Trent. The picture in the graphic novel gives a fair idea and leaves less for the imagination. I also agree with you on how the picture helps to tell the story.
The pictures in a graphic novel definitely do add to the descriptions in this story. I think that a graphic novel also serves to draw the reader into the book more. Although the illustrations were very stylized, we are used to living our life through pictures. We don't hear a description of everything that is happening to us as we go about our lives and the same would be true for Satrapi. It makes more sense to tell a story in the way that you lived it.

I thought reading a graphic novel was a lot better than reading a non graphic one. Usually I would not have liked the graphic version but it was kind of hard for me to follow this book. There was a lot of detail that I might have not been able to visualize by myself. I felt that I retained more of what I read because I didn't get bored.
I really enjoy reading this novel. I love looking at the pictures and connecting the pictures with the text in the story. I thought it was easier to read and understand.
i am finding that reading a graphic novel is difficult because as a child all you read were picture books and when you start to read novels you forget about the pictures now it is hard to follow the pictures with little text.
I thought that reading a graphic novel is so much easier and more interesting. You don't have to imagine as much because the novel have picture and through the picture you can understand it.
I like reading a graphic novel. The pictures are great, you don't have to imagine the story in your mind. I think with the pictures you can then take your time to really feel what her and her family went through. awesome book!
When I first paged through the book, I thought it was a really childish way to write a book. I dont think I've read a comic book in about 12 years. But once I started, I couldnt stop! Pictures make the book much more interesting and easy to get into. i loved it!
I thought it was easier to make you understand how the characters felt. Also it helped you understand the authors feelings
i thik it is alot easier to read than a regular book. because ther are illustartions so you dont have to imagine it in your head it's already drawn out in picter to refer back to. that way u focus mor4e on the text.
I agree with you Nick, that’s I how I feel like also, I can better relate to the author by her pictures in the novel it gave me a better understanding of what she wants us to establish on the revolution. And her views on the big picture of the war.
Obivoulsy, a graphic novel is going to be more enjoyable overall. A graphic novel can tell you a story and show you a story at the same time. Where else, a regular novel can only tell you a story, and then you have to use your imagination to picture how things are. Also, there may be times when you might not understand something, the images will help make some sense to what a word may mean, along with the words used with the unknown word. So it doesn't really hurt to have images. In most cases, people would prefer a graphic novel over a regular novel.
Now that I have experienced reading a graphic novel, I rather enjoy it. Being an artist myself helps me appreciate what Satrapi was trying to convey.I really felt like I was watching a movie, but yet I could stop, and ponder on one panel to take time to think.
I am becoming a big fan of reading graphic novels! I read Maus for my last English Literature class and I enjoyed it very much. It too spoke of a historical event - the holocaust.
I enjoy reading graphic novels because I can see how the characters feel. You can see it in the pictures and the way the pictures are drawn. There is so much more to the story when you can have a mental picture of what is being read. You can also see much more in the symbolism. I like it. :o)
I thought it was much easier to read a graphic novel; I had an easier time understanding what was being said in some areas. I don’t know if I would have been able to read this story as a regular novel, it may not have caught my attention as much. Sometimes simple words and pictures can tell a better story than just writing alone. Jsweeney
